SAP NetWeaver Process Integration (PI)

SAP Process Integration (PI), formerly SAP Exchange Infrastructure (XI), sits at the heart of SAP's integration and ESOA strategy facilitating information and data exchange between disparate systems.

The PI solution evolved from the need to reduce interface, operations and management costs associated with point-to-point interface technologies where the messages are managed in many places in a number of ways with inconsistent methods for defining security, protocols and message format.

SAP PI can be used as the integration platform for:

  • SAP and non-SAP applications
  • Application-to-Application and Business-to-Business scenarios
  • Business Task Management for collaborative tasks and workflows
  • Business Process Management to design and model cross-application processes
  • Service Oriented Architectures for Enterprise Services definition

SAP PI can also pave the way towards ESOA enablement; SAP PI contains the Enterprise Services Repository and Registry for the governance and access of enterprise services. The Enterprise Services Repository acts as the metadata repository for services including detail on integration scenarios, process models, global data types, integration mappings and processes. As such SAP PI can be utilised as the SAP middleware for modelling and designing services.
